What Is a Deed Poll Apostille and When Do You Need One?

An apostille is an official stamp issued by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) that authenticates a UK document for use overseas. When attached to a certified and apostilled deed poll, it confirms the document was signed by a recognised UK notary public — making your name change legally valid in over 120 countries that are members of the Hague Apostille Convention.

Does a Deed Poll Need to Be Stamped?

A deed poll does not need to be stamped to be valid within the UK. However, for international use, the deed poll must first be notarised by a notary public and then stamped with an apostille by the FCDO. If your deed poll is going overseas, a notary public is the best choice for certification — notaries are specifically trained and regulated to prepare documents for international use, and foreign authorities are accustomed to accepting notarised documents. The apostille stamp is the internationally recognised certification that makes your deed poll valid abroad. Without it, most overseas institutions — banks, government offices, embassies — will not accept your UK deed poll. Not sure whether you need an apostille or notarisation? See our guide explaining the difference.

What Is a Certified Deed Poll?

A certified deed poll is one that has been verified and certified by a notary public. The notary attaches a deed poll certificate — a notarial certificate confirming the document is genuine and that the signatory’s identity has been verified. This certification is the essential first step before applying for an apostille. At Edward Young Notaries, we provide same-day certification at our Wigmore Street office. We also offer e-apostille services for electronic notarisation where accepted.

Who Can Sign a Deed Poll as a Witness?

Any independent adult aged 18 or over can witness a deed poll, provided they are not a family member. The witness must know you personally and confirm your identity. If you need the deed poll apostilled for international use, our notary can witness your signature as part of the certification process — combining both steps into a single appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Deed Poll Apostilles

A deed poll does not need to be stamped to be valid in the UK. However, if you plan to use your deed poll overseas, it will need to be certified (notarised) by a notary public and then stamped with an apostille by the FCDO. A notary public is the best choice for certification when your deed poll is going abroad — notaries are specifically trained and regulated to prepare documents for international use. The apostille stamp is the internationally recognised certification that makes your deed poll valid in over 120 Hague Convention countries.
Any independent adult aged 18 or over can sign a deed poll as a witness, provided they are not a family member. The witness must know you personally and be able to confirm your identity. Common choices include friends, colleagues, or neighbours. If you need the deed poll apostilled for international use, a notary public can also witness your signature as part of the certification process.
A certified deed poll is a deed poll that has been verified by a notary public — either as a certified true copy of the original or where the notary has witnessed the signature directly. Certification confirms the document is genuine and that the signatory’s identity has been verified. If you need to use your deed poll abroad, certification by a notary public is the essential first step before applying for an apostille from the FCDO.
A deed poll certificate typically refers to the notarial certificate attached to a deed poll when it is certified by a notary public. This certificate confirms the notary has verified the document and the signatory’s identity. Once the notarial certificate is attached, the deed poll can be submitted to the FCDO for an apostille, making it valid for use in over 120 countries worldwide.
An apostille is an official certificate issued by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) that authenticates a UK deed poll for use in another country. It confirms the document was certified by a recognised UK notary public. The apostille is accepted in over 120 countries that are members of the Hague Apostille Convention.
We offer two service levels. Five-day standard processing (£286 total including VAT and FCDO fee) or next-day express (£310 total — appointment before 10am required). Both include notarisation, FCDO submission, and return delivery — so you do not need to visit the FCDO yourself. See our full apostille service page for details.
You cannot apostille a plain photocopy. However, a notary public can create a certified true copy of your original deed poll, attach a notarial certificate, and then submit the certified copy for an apostille. This is the recommended approach when you need to keep the original deed poll and send the apostilled copy abroad.
You only need an apostille if you plan to use your new name overseas — for example, to update a foreign bank account, apply for a visa, register with a foreign government, or get married abroad. If your name change is only for use within the UK, an apostille is not required. Read more about the difference between an apostille and notarisation.
